Southern Loop

via Tierradentro & San Agustin

The Southern loop is a great way to see the two UNESCO World Heritage sites in South Colombia without the hassle of public transport on these remote routes. Enjoy the freedom to stop on the way in Andean villages, admire the mountainous landscape from the comfort of a modern 4x4 and experience the adventure of getting off the beaten track and visiting some of the most important archaeological finds of the continent. Your experienced and knowledgeable driver will be happy to point out places of interest as well as help with recommendations and logistics at the destinations. The following is a typical itinerary although there is some flexibility with departure times and as some of the roads are unpaved and in poor condition, travel times can vary.

Suggested Express Itinerarary:
Day 1: Leave Popayan at 8am and travel to Tierradentro (5 hours)
Day 2: Leave Tierradentro at 1pm and travel to San Agustin (6 hours)
Day 3: Full day exploring San Agustin and surroundings.
Day 4: Leave San Agustin at 9am and travel to Popayan (5 hours)

Colombian Coffee Triangle

Explore the quaint villages of the coffee region

Few regions conjure up the classic image of Colombia more than the Coffee Region.  Rolling green hills planted with some of the world´s finest coffee and picturesque villages with brightly painted shop fronts where farmers, local business owners and tourists rub shoulders over a cold beer at the corner shop or a tinto (coffee) at the local cafeteria.

As Colombia´s show piece for International tourism, a variety of options for activities, accommodation and experiences are available in the Coffee Region. While we specialise in showing you the road less travelled in Colombia, we believe that some destinations are popular for a reason! Whether you prefer getting you hands dirty on a coffee farm or horseback riding through forests of 60 metre tall wax palm trees, bird watching or just sipping a world class coffee with a world class view, we urge you to contact us so that we can put together a trip that will really tick all your boxes and make your trip unforgettable.

Some of our favourite activities and experiences in the coffee region include:

  • Learning about the area´s biodiversity at the botanical garden and butterfly reserve in Armenia.

  • Hiking through the Cocora Valley and visiting the humming birds at Acaime Nature Reserve.

  • Learning, hands on, how coffee is grown, harvested, processed and roasted.

  • Horse riding through the farmlands, mountains and forests that make this area unique.

  • Hiking in the breath-taking paramos of Los Nevados National Park.

  • Taking a driving tour of the coffee villages to see the unique character of each.

Pasto, El Santuario & Galeras

explore the andean region of Nariño

Join us on an exciting trip to this lesser known stretch of the Colombian Andes! Nariño is Colombia’s southernmost region and it´s unique cultural identity and breath-taking landscapes make for a truly unforgettable experience.  Touched little by international tourism, this is an opportunity for those who like to get off the beaten track and wish to visit the wild and wonderful places that this part of the country has to offer.

With most of the area´s attractions perched high amongst the volcanoes and Andean peaks, a certain level of preparation and flexibility is required. Weather conditions can be harsh and changeable at times, tourism infrastructure can be limited and in some places non-existent. However, those willing to take the chance are rewarded by some of the most spectacular destinations and unique hosts that Colombia has to offer.

Due to the obvious logistical challenges in off the beaten track travel, we urge you to contact us so that together we can plan your trip. This allows us to include the activities best suited to the expected weather conditions, your preferences and the availability of local service providers.

Some of our favourite activities in Nariño include:

  • A full day driving tour of the foothill villages surrounding Volcán Galeras, the active volcano that overlooks the city of Pasto.

  • Laguna La Cocha, the high altitude lake home to Colombia´s smallest National Park located on Carrota Island.

  • Laguna Verde, a breath taking hike to the emerald lake, nestled in an active volcanic crater.

  • Sanctuario de La Lajas, a site believed to be responsible for miracles, an important destination for Catholic pilgrims and an architectural gem.

  • Learning about the region´s traditional art and handicrafts including Mopa-mopa varnish, Iraca palm leaf hats from Sandona and the floats and sculptures paraded through the streets during the annual ´Blancos y Negros´ festival celebrated throughout the region in January.

  • Visiting community environmental preservation and farming cooperatives.

  • Hiking and enjoying a boat trip in the nature reserve surrounding Cumbal volcano….or even attempting this challenging peak on the Ecuadorian border.

  • Exploring the local culture, history and gastronomy of Pasto city centre with an energetic and knowledgeable local guide.
